European education faces declining standards and AI challenges

European student performance has seen a significant decline over the last decade. In the Netherlands, once an excellent educational system, data shows one of the largest drops in quality, with one in fifteen 15-year-olds at risk of leaving school with low literacy skills.

Factors such as social media and artificial intelligence are being examined for their impact on learning and the ability of students to distinguish between facts and opinions. To combat the misuse of AI in school assignments, some regions are shifting assessment methods. In Denmark, new national guidelines for students aged 16 to 19 include mandatory oral examinations alongside written tasks to ensure writing skills are maintained and to prevent students from using AI to generate entire reports.

Educators note that AI-generated texts often appear at a level inconsistent with a student's known capabilities, serving as a red flag for teachers. Experts suggest that returning to oral testing and more frequent written check-ins may help preserve academic integrity and skill development.
