European educational initiatives focus on democracy and volunteerism

Various educational and social initiatives in Germany and Austria are addressing the strengthening of democratic values and professionalizing volunteer work.

In Germany, scholars Helena Kaiser and Bernd Kaßebaum have discussed the necessity of democratizing the economy and the workplace to counter autocratic trends and social polarization. They argue that a sustainable civil society requires citizens to have more influence over the products of their own labor.

In Austria, the Salzburger Bildungswerk has launched a new certification program designed to make the competencies of volunteer educational managers visible. The program aims to support those organizing community programs—ranging from AI lectures to writing workshops—by providing formal recognition and professional development.

Additionally, the Kärntner Bildungswerk is implementing the ‘EuropaWirkt! – Werte im Wortwechsel’ project. This initiative seeks to promote European values such as freedom, tolerance, and justice in rural areas, using local engagement to foster dialogue and combat social polarization.
