European election cycle threatens political and economic stability

A dense cycle of elections across eight European countries through 2027 is creating risks for European Union integration and economic stability. The electoral marathon, beginning with early elections in Spain and extending to Estonia, Finland, Greece, Slovakia, Poland, and Italy, is expected to culminate in the French presidential elections in the spring.

Analysts warn that this cycle may lead to political paralysis, as governments might avoid difficult decisions in pre-election environments. This poses specific risks to the approval of the 2028-2034 seven-year budget and the promotion of European capital markets integration.

Financial markets are already showing signs of tension. In France, investor concern regarding debt sustainability has caused ten-year bond spreads to exceed those of Greece and Italy. France's 2027 budget projects a deficit of 5% of GDP, significantly above the 3% limit, while public debt approaches 120% of GDP.
