European electric vehicle prices dip as battery costs fall

The average price of a new battery‑electric car in the European Union fell by four percent last year, bringing the continent‑wide average to about €42,700. The decline follows reduced lithium‑ion battery pack prices and the launch of affordable compact models such as the Renault 5 and Citroën ë‑C3, which helped push small‑car prices down by roughly 13 percent.

Automakers are also introducing low‑cost electric alternatives to traditional small cars. Recent tests include a sub‑£20,000 Renault Twingo, a planned Citroën electric 2CV priced around £15,000, and Volkswagen’s ID.1 slated for release next year at about £17,000, each offering roughly 150 miles of range. According to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association, EV sales across the EU rose by more than 40 % in the first half of the year, underscoring growing consumer interest as purchase costs narrow the gap with gasoline vehicles, whose prices are climbing due to stricter emission regulations.
