Germany upsets Bulgaria to advance in EuroVolley 2026

Bulgaria was eliminated from the EuroVolley 2026 round of 16 after a dramatic 2-3 loss to Germany in Sofia. Despite holding a 2-0 set lead, the Bulgarian team struggled with service errors and a loss of concentration, allowing Germany to stage a comeback and win the tie-break 15-12.

Bulgarian coach Gianlorenzo Blengini expressed deep disappointment, noting that the team could not rely solely on their service and that Germany took more risks in attack and service. Player Aleksandar Nikolov also cited fatigue and concentration issues as key factors in the loss. Despite the exit, Nikolov remained a standout performer, ranking second in the tournament's scoring charts.

In other EuroVolley action, Germany advances to face defending champions Poland in the quarterfinals. Finland also secured a spot in the quarterfinals following a 146-minute thriller against Greece, winning 3-2. Meanwhile, Italy dominated Denmark with a 3-0 victory in Turin, setting up a quarterfinal clash against Finland.
