European energy crisis impacts gas reserves and Swedish electricity prices

Europe faces potential energy instability as gas reserves are projected to be significantly lower than normal heading into the winter season. Analysis from Rystad Energy suggests storage levels may reach only approximately 76 percent by late October or November, creating a need for additional imports that could exceed last year's levels.

Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have impacted LNG deliveries from the Persian Gulf, driving up spot market prices. This forces Europe to rely on more volatile and expensive flows from the United States and West Africa, while also competing with high demand from Asia. To avoid price spikes, the EU may need to procure between 7 and 15 million tons of extra LNG by June 2027.

In Sweden, electricity prices have reached record highs during parts of the summer. Expert Jan Blomgren attributes this to a combination of lower domestic production and the broader European market's dependence on gas. Because Swedish electricity is exported to neighbors like Germany and Denmark when prices rise there, domestic prices in Sweden are also driven upward.
