European energy prices rise as gas hits 2026 high
European energy markets are facing significant upward pressure on both gas and electricity prices. On August 18, 2026, European gas prices reached a yearly high, closing at €64.30 per MWh. This represents a 134% increase from the low recorded in January 2026.
Gas prices are currently 52% higher than the three-year average. This surge is attributed to several factors, including geopolitical tensions in the Strait of Hormuz affecting LNG supplies, heatwaves in Southern and Central Europe driving cooling demand, and slow replenishment of gas storage facilities. As of mid-August, EU gas storage levels were at approximately 59%, significantly lower than previous years. In response to these supply concerns, the European Commission lowered the required gas storage target for member states from 90% to 80%.
Simultaneously, electricity spot prices are projected to rise through the autumn and winter. In Finland, experts cite low water reserves in Northern Sweden and Norway, alongside increased demand from data centers, as contributing factors. In Flanders, the expected annual electricity cost for an average household is estimated at €1,359, reflecting a recent increase in energy prices.
