European gas markets face volatility as storage levels drop below historical averages
European natural gas markets are facing heightened volatility as storage levels drop significantly below historical averages. EU gas storage was reported at approximately 63% to 65%, well below the typical 80% seen during this period. Analysts warn that this low inventory increases the risk of sharp price spikes during the upcoming winter, especially if unexpected cold weather or supply disruptions occur.
The Dutch TTF natural gas benchmark recently surpassed the 70 euro per megawatt-hour threshold. This upward pressure is driven by concerns over liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies, exacerbated by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and potential disruptions near the Strait of Hormuz.
In Romania, energy officials noted that gas storage levels are around 70%, a decrease from the 82% recorded during the same period last year. Additionally, the National Union Bloc (BNS) has called for an urgent hearing with the leadership of the National Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE) to address delays in authorizing new electricity production and storage capacities. Experts suggest that due to low hydroelectric and solar output, coal will remain vital for the national energy system this winter.
