European energy security debates intensify over Nord Stream and Russian gas

Political debates regarding European energy dependence on Russia have intensified following controversial statements by Polish MEP Grzegorz Braun. Speaking at a conference in Germany alongside members of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, Braun called for the reactivation of the Nord Stream pipelines, suggesting that Poland should become a shareholder rather than boycotting the project. He argued that Europe cannot function without Russian gas and warned of potential bankruptcy without it.

These remarks drew sharp condemnation from the Polish government. Energy Minister Miłosz Motyka described Braun’s position as “shame and treason,” noting that energy reliance on Moscow provides the Kremlin with financial resources for the war in Ukraine and political leverage over European nations.

The broader discussion highlights different political approaches that have historically impacted Russian interests in the West. Analysts point to Angela Merkel’s promotion of Nord Stream, Viktor Orbán’s political alignment with Moscow, and recent discussions regarding the easing of sanctions on Russian diesel under the Trump administration as various methods through which Russian economic and strategic interests have been maintained or strengthened.
