European energy security faces risks amid low gas storage

The European energy sector faces growing uncertainty as gas storage levels remain lower than historical averages. While the European Commission and member states have characterized the supply as “stable” for the upcoming winter, data from Gas Infrastructure Europe indicates that EU storage levels were approximately 70 percent in late September, significantly lower than the 80 to 90 percent levels seen in previous years.

Specific regional data shows critical levels in several countries, with Germany and the Netherlands both reporting storage levels near 57 percent. In contrast, Italy and France maintain higher levels above 80 percent.

The supply strain is attributed to geopolitical tensions, specifically disruptions to LNG shipments through the Strait of Hormuz following military actions involving Iran. These disruptions have led QatarEnergy to maintain force majeure on deliveries to European buyers, increasing the risk of reliance on expensive spot market imports if a cold winter occurs.
