European Environment Agency air quality ranking highlights Sardinian cities

The European Environment Agency (EEA) has released an updated ranking of 761 European cities, evaluating air quality based on the mortality risk associated with long-term exposure to three key pollutants: PM2.5, nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and tropospheric ozone (O3).

This new methodology shifts focus from simple concentration levels to the combined health impact of multiple pollutants. By utilizing modeled data on 1x1 kilometer resolution maps, the analysis provides a more comprehensive view of population exposure, even in areas lacking specific monitoring stations. While the report notes that air pollution remains a significant health risk across most European urban centers, two cities in Sardinia, Italy, were highlighted for having the best air quality in the region.
