European Environment Agency urges climate action after record heat

Leena Ylä-Mononen, Executive Director of the European Environment Agency (EEA), has called for decisive action following a summer marked by record heat, droughts, and forest fires across Europe. She noted that the extreme weather has caused significant disruptions, including agricultural crop failures, low water levels in the Rhine and Danube rivers, and cooling water shortages.

Ylä-Mononen emphasized that many of these damages could have been avoided through proactive investments in energy, transport, and food production sectors. She urged for a dual approach: reducing greenhouse gas emissions while simultaneously investing in long-term climate adaptation strategies that account for the next 10 to 50 years.

In Germany, political discourse has intensified following the record-breaking heat of 2026. While initial government responses were criticized as hesitant, political figures from various parties have begun calling for more robust measures to address heat protection in schools and hospitals, as well as strategies to manage the impact of low river levels on inland shipping.
