European EV market trends show divergence between Germany and Italy
Market data reveals a divergence in European automotive preferences regarding electric and hybrid vehicles. In Germany, pure electric vehicles (EVs) are significantly outperforming plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). In July 2026, Germany saw 78,609 EV sales, representing a 39.3% market share, while PHEVs remained residual sales. Audi notably accounted for over a third of rechargeable vehicle sales in the German market.
In contrast, Italy shows a different trend where plug-in hybrids are more popular than pure electrics. In July, Italy recorded 13,103 PHEV sales (10% market share) compared to 7,368 pure electric sales (5.9% market share). This pattern of preferring hybrids over pure electrics is also observed in major markets like France and the United Kingdom.
The transition toward zero-emission transport is driven by European Parliament mandates to end the registration of new internal combustion engine vehicles by 2035. While technologies like e-fuels and biofuels are being studied, battery-powered electric vehicles remain the primary viable path for meeting these zero-emission requirements.
