European FCAS fighter jet project collapses

The Future Combat Air System (FCAS) project has collapsed following the decision by France and Germany to abandon the joint development of the sixth-generation fighter jet. The failure, confirmed in June 2026, marks a significant setback for European strategic autonomy and the goal of reducing technological dependence on the United States.

The project's dissolution follows years of industrial friction between Airbus and Dassault Aviation regarding program leadership, design control, and the distribution of responsibilities. While Airbus represented German interests, Dassault sought a dominant role in the development process. Spain, which joined the program in 2019, had sought to maintain equal partnership status.

Beyond the aircraft itself, the FCAS was intended to include the Next Generation Weapon System (NGWS), integrating manned fighters with drones, advanced sensors, and combat cloud technology. With an estimated investment of approximately 100 billion euros, the program's halt risks technological fragmentation and the duplication of costs as participating nations may now pursue separate solutions.
