European fibre market shifts toward consolidation and B2B growth
The European fibre market is shifting from rapid expansion toward a phase of consolidation and strategic restructuring. Driven by rising debt costs and slower returns, operators are increasingly pursuing mergers to achieve scale and reduce duplicated costs. Notable activity includes the merger of Zzoomm and FullFibre in the UK, as well as infrastructure deals in Germany and the Netherlands.
Industry data from AlixPartners suggests that 85% of fibre mergers fail to meet expected integration savings, often due to technical challenges in merging fragmented operational and billing systems. Successful integration requires high-quality data and robust digital records to prevent service disruptions and billing errors.
In a parallel strategic shift, Eurofiber has completed a €2.2 billion refinancing to support its B2B-focused growth model. The company is pivoting away from residential fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) markets, having recently sold stakes in Unifiber and Eurofiber Netz, to focus on enterprise services and infrastructure across the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, and Germany.
