European funds drive restoration of Romanian heritage sites

Several historical sites in Romania are undergoing significant restoration projects funded by European Union resources to boost local tourism and preserve cultural identity.

In the Apuseni Mountains, the Colțești Fortress, a medieval fortification dating back to 1296, has been reopened to the public. The approximately two million euro project, funded through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, included the construction of access platforms, stairs, and viewpoints, as well as the transformation of the Thoroczkay-Rudnyanszky Manor into a tourist information center.

In Maramureș, the Teleki Géza Castle in Pribilești is being rehabilitated through a project valued at over 61 million lei. Funded by the European Regional Development Fund, the initiative aims to transform the currently inaccessible building into a cultural hub capable of attracting at least 1,000 visitors annually. The project is managed by the Maramureș County Council and is scheduled for completion by August 2028.
