European gas prices hit highest levels since 2022 amid Hormuz tensions
European natural gas prices have surged to their highest levels since late 2022, driven by escalating tensions in the Middle East and supply concerns in the Persian Gulf. The Title Transfer Facility (TTF) benchmark for gas delivery in one month rose by more than 5%, reaching levels above 83 euros per megawatt-hour.
The price spike follows the postponement of a critical meeting between Iran and several Gulf nations, including Oman, intended to discuss safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. Investors are increasingly concerned that a blockade of the strait could cause long-term disruptions to global liquefied natural gas (LNG) flows, which have already seen significant volatility.
In addition to gas, oil prices have trended upward, with Brent crude exceeding 107 dollars per barrel. The energy crisis is compounded by the need for European nations to rapidly replenish gas storage facilities ahead of the winter heating season, amid fears that global supply tightness could intensify competition for resources.
