European gas prices surge amid low storage and geopolitical risks

European natural gas markets are facing significant volatility and supply concerns ahead of the winter heating season. Wholesale prices, specifically the Dutch TTF benchmark, have risen sharply, recently exceeding 66 to 68 euros per megawatt-hour. Goldman Sachs analysts have warned that prices could potentially surge past 100 euros per megawatt-hour in December if geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Middle East, persist.

Gas storage levels across the European Union are notably low, currently filled at approximately 63 percent, which is significantly below the five-year seasonal average of 79 percent. Specific regional concerns include Germany, where storage is at roughly 51 percent, and the Netherlands, where levels are around 44 percent. Gasunie has indicated that the Netherlands is unlikely to meet its seasonal storage targets, though a total shortage is not certain unless a severe winter occurs.

To rebuild reserves, Europe requires more than 140 LNG cargo arrivals per month. The region faces intense competition with Asian markets for available liquefied natural gas shipments, a situation exacerbated by potential disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
