Europe faces energy crisis risks as gas storage levels hit historic lows
Europe faces a potential energy crisis this winter as natural gas storage levels remain critically low. EU gas storage is currently at approximately 63% capacity, which is roughly 18 percentage points below the five-year average for this period. This deficit, combined with geopolitical instability and competition for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), has driven the Dutch TTF benchmark price above 68 euro/MWh.
Analysts warn that if a severe cold spell occurs, prices could surge to between 90 and 120 euro/MWh, mirroring the energy crisis seen in 2022. Specific regions are particularly vulnerable; for instance, German and Dutch storage levels are reported at 51% and 44% respectively. Goldman Sachs analysts have noted that TTF prices could reach 100 euro/MWh by December if Middle Eastern energy exports do not normalize.
The shortage of reserves reduces the safety margin for peak demand periods in January and February. Experts from Argus Media highlight that current storage levels are at their lowest since the 2021 crisis. There are concerns that rising wholesale costs will eventually impact consumer electricity and heating bills, with the timing of these increases varying by country.
