European government bond yields rise amid geopolitical tension

European government bond markets experienced losses on Friday. German Bund yields for ten-year bonds rose to 3.19 percent, while the Euro-Bund Future fell by 0.43 percent. Similarly, Austrian ten-year benchmark bond yields increased by 6 basis points to 3.40 percent.

Market volatility is being driven by rising crude oil prices and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, specifically regarding the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Economic data from the United States also influenced markets; US retail sales for July fell unexpectedly, a trend analysts attribute to declining gasoline prices. Additionally, consumer sentiment in the US, as measured by the University of Michigan, showed an unexpected decline in August.

In contrast, US Treasury markets saw slight gains earlier in the week. The ten-year T-Note yield fell to 4.67 percent following reports that US inflation slowed to 3.4 percent in July. While inflation has cooled, analysts remain cautious due to ongoing geopolitical instability and the potential for renewed energy price increases.
