European government bond yields rise amid market volatility

Yields on European government bonds have seen significant increases, reflecting growing market concerns. In Italy, the ten-year Btp yield rose to 4.62% on October 7, 2026, resulting in a Btp-Bund spread of 115.2 basis points. This increase represents a higher cost for the Italian Treasury to finance its debt.

In France, the ten-year Oat yield briefly exceeded 5% on October 21, the first time since 2002. The spread between French and German bonds reached approximately 157 basis points. Investors are reportedly weighing risks related to France's fiscal stability, including potential credit rating downgrades by Moody’s and domestic unrest. The French government is currently debating a 2027 budget aimed at reducing a debt that has reached approximately 120% of GDP, though projected deficits remain above European limits.

Broader market trends suggest these rises are partly driven by systemic factors, including energy price increases and central bank interest rate policies.
