European Green Capital finalists include three Spanish cities

The European Union is set to announce the winners of the annual European Green Capital and Green Leaf Awards on October 8 in Guimarães, Portugal. These awards recognize cities that achieve measurable environmental progress while improving the quality of life for residents.

For the European Green Capital title, which is designated for cities with over 100,000 inhabitants, the five finalists are Aalborg (Denmark), Bielsko-Biała (Poland), Košice (Slovakia), Porto (Portugal), and Zaragoza (Spain).

The Green Leaf Awards, intended for smaller cities with populations between 20,000 and 100,000, feature Benidorm and Chiclana de la Frontera from Spain, and Estarreja from Portugal as preselected candidates.

An independent panel of experts evaluated the candidates based on seven key areas, including air and water quality, biodiversity, waste and noise management, emission reduction speed, and climate preparedness.
