European health trends show rising cancer and STI rates

Health experts are highlighting rising trends in infectious diseases and cancer across Europe. In Poland, medical professionals are reporting record levels of sexually transmitted infections, including syphilis and HIV. In Szczecin, a diagnostic center has identified dozens of new cases, many of which were previously unknown to the patients. Experts emphasize the importance of free, anonymous testing for HIV, Hepatitis C, and syphilis to curb the spread, particularly as congenital syphilis cases increase.

Separately, data from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) suggests a significant surge in cancer diagnoses across Europe. Projections indicate that annual cancer cases could rise from 4.33 million in 2024 to 5.16 million by 2050. While an aging population—often referred to as a ‘silver tsunami’—is a primary driver, medical experts note a concerning increase in cancer rates among younger populations, specifically citing colorectal cancer as being linked to lifestyle factors in urbanized environments.
