European healthcare systems adopt measurable quality standards

European healthcare systems are facing increasing pressure due to aging populations, staff shortages, and a rise in chronic diseases. To address these challenges, institutions are moving beyond simple service provision toward rigorous, measurable quality management and accelerated digitalization.

Modern quality verification systems are evolving from mere regulatory compliance tools into instruments for systematic organizational improvement, focusing on patient safety, efficiency, and risk management. The EN 15224 standard plays a critical role in this process by providing a framework specifically designed for the healthcare sector. It focuses on the patient care pathway, addressing key metrics such as timeliness of treatment, effectiveness of care, risk recognition, and continuity of care across different departments.

While ISO 9001 provides a general quality management framework, the EN 15224 standard enhances these requirements with eleven specific aspects of healthcare quality, including patient-centered care and continuity of supply. Legislative requirements regarding these standards are also evolving in countries like Slovenia.
