Wildfires in France and Spain have released large plumes of smoke that spread across central Spain and southern France, exposing millions of people to fine particulate matter (PM2.5). Scientists warned that multi‑day exposure to very high PM2.5 levels poses a major health risk, linking the pollutant to cardiovascular disease, lung cancer and respiratory problems.

In the French city of Bordeaux, PM2.5 concentrations on 26 July topped 300 µg m⁻³ and averaged 115 µg m⁻³, almost five times the EU daily limit. Further north, in Limoges, levels peaked above 400 µg m⁻³ over the weekend. The smoke plume also carried elevated PM2.5 from Madrid, creating unusually high concentrations hundreds of kilometres from the fires.

The emissions are compounded by climate change, which intensifies hot, dry conditions that allow fires to spread faster and burn longer. European wildfires this year have emitted roughly 18 million metric tonnes of CO₂, adding to the climate feedback loop. Public‑health authorities advised residents to stay indoors, keep windows closed and use masks where advised.
