European Heatwave Poses Up to 5% Eurozone GDP Loss

A June 2026 heatwave broke temperature records in more than a dozen European countries. In the United Kingdom, daily maxima reached 37.7 °C in Norfolk, eclipsing the previous June high by up to 10 °C, while several cities across western, central and eastern Europe recorded temperatures above 40 °C.

Analysts estimate that such extreme heat could shave 5‑7 % off Eurozone output by 2030 and reduce GDP by about 5 % in a 3 °C warming scenario by 2050. The 2022 heat added 0.7 percentage points to food prices and 0.3 points to overall inflation. Sectors such as agriculture, tourism and construction face direct losses, while governments must fund infrastructure upgrades and compensation, tightening public‑financing margins.
