European Heritage Days 2026 to feature photography and endangered heritage themes
The 2026 edition of the European Heritage Days is scheduled for mid-September, featuring two primary themes: ‘Heritage of Photography’ and ‘Heritage in Peril: Revive, Resist, Reimagine’. Organized by the Ministry of Culture, the event offers widespread access to historical sites, museums, and government buildings across various regions.
In France, numerous locations are participating. Saint-Nazaire will focus on its photographic history, including shipyard imagery, while Bordeaux will offer free access to landmarks like the Grand Théâtre. In the Gers region, administrative buildings such as the prefecture and sub-prefectures will open to the public. Other regional programs include activities in Maine-et-Loire, Bugey-Sud, and Martinique, ranging from traditional weaving demonstrations to guided tours of medieval sites.
In Belgium, the event will take place in Wallonia, with Namur hosting over 300 free activities, including tours of the historic Halle al’Chair. Additionally, a specialized ‘Economic Heritage Days’ event is planned for early October in Réunion, aimed at connecting the public and youth with local industries and professional trades.
