Wall Street falls as Treasury yields and oil prices rise

U.S. stock markets experienced a significant downturn as rising Treasury yields, surging oil prices, and disappointing retail data weighed on investor sentiment. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by approximately 1.3%, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq also saw notable declines.

A major driver of the volatility was the bond market. Despite a recent intervention by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to increase long-term debt repurchases, yields rebounded sharply. The 30-year Treasury yield climbed toward 5.25%, driven by concerns over the U.S. national debt, which recently surpassed $40 trillion, and persistent inflation risks.

In the retail sector, Walmart shares plummeted over 9% following quarterly results that showed slower-than-expected same-store sales growth, raising concerns about consumer health.

Geopolitical tensions also contributed to market instability. Brent crude oil prices rose above $90 per barrel following threats from President Donald Trump of a massive economic operation against Iran, amid ongoing conflict in the Middle East and uncertainty regarding energy supplies through the Strait of Hormuz.
