European tech leaders warn against abandoning AI model development

Leading European technology executives are warning against political suggestions to pivot away from developing advanced artificial intelligence models. Leaders argue that focusing solely on AI applications rather than foundational models will create a dangerous economic dependency on the United States and threaten the continent's global standing.

Arthur Mensch, CEO of the French AI company Mistral, issued a warning titled “Build or surrender,” stating that abandoning advanced AI development could cost Europe its remaining global influence and lead to significant trade balance issues. Similarly, Jarek Kutylowski, CEO of the German research lab DeepL, emphasized the necessity of maintaining the entire AI value chain to prevent economic value from flowing exclusively to the U.S.

These warnings follow comments from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who suggested that Europeans do not necessarily need to develop advanced technology themselves to derive value from it. However, tech entrepreneurs contend that without domestic systems, Europe will be left with only the “scraps” of the technological revolution.
