European insurers and Commission form climate risk alliance
European insurance companies and the European Commission are collaborating to address the rising financial risks posed by climate-driven natural disasters. The European Commission has begun developing the ‘Climate Insurance Alliance’, a public-private partnership designed to mitigate the economic impact of large-scale catastrophes such as droughts, wildfires, and severe storms.
Major European insurers, including Allianz, Zurich, AXA, Munich Re, Generali, Swiss Re, Prudential, Mapfre, and Sampo, are expected to issue a joint public statement regarding the climate crisis. This move follows extreme weather events across the continent, including droughts in Central Europe, fires in France, and hailstorms in Switzerland.
Economic data indicates the severity of the situation, with Triodos Bank estimating that extreme heat alone cost the European economy 180 billion euros this year. The initiative aims to create mechanisms to contain the growing public expenditure required by national treasuries to manage disaster recovery.
