Southern Europe wildfires strain insurers

A wave of megafires has swept across southern Europe, scorching large areas of France, Spain and Greece. In France, about 220,000 residents have been evacuated as flames approach towns such as Bordeaux. Estimates put total French losses at €10‑15 billion, with insured losses running into several billion euros.

Reinsurance broker Guy Carpenter notes that, so far, insured losses are relatively contained because many of the fires have hit rural zones with lower property exposure. The firm warns that if the blazes reach densely populated regions, the financial impact could rise sharply, with secondary costs from business interruption, smoke, evacuation and supply‑chain disruption adding to the burden.

Private insurers are expected to shoulder most of the recovery bill; France’s state‑backed natural‑disaster scheme does not cover wildfires. Analysts at Morningstar DBRS and Fitch Ratings say the episode offers a glimpse of future challenges for the insurance sector, though they expect limited impact on 2026 earnings provided the fires do not spread to major residential or commercial areas.
