Europe faces rising economic risks from forest fires and heatwaves
Europe is facing escalating economic and human costs due to extreme heatwaves and forest fires. Recent summer disasters in France, Spain, and Greece have seen temperatures exceed 40°C, with winds in Greece reaching speeds of 100 km/h. These conditions have contributed to over 14,000 deaths and displaced hundreds of thousands of people.
Insurance companies are warning of a growing "protection gap," where a significant portion of assets lacks coverage for natural disasters. Data from Allianz Commercial shows that insurance payouts for forest fires rose from $8.7 billion in the 2000s to $56.3 billion in the 2010s. The most affected sectors include energy, real estate, construction, agriculture, and transport.
Mario Greco, CEO of Zurich Insurance Group, noted that while fire risks can be mitigated, many European governments have not yet implemented sufficient systematic preparations. In the hardest-hit Eurozone countries, the estimated cost of fires and heatwaves through late July reached approximately 3.1 billion euros.
