European Interior Ministers meet in Munich to discuss migration policy
Interior Ministers from 17 European countries met in Munich for the ‘Munich Migration Meeting’ to discuss strengthening the European Union’s migration and asylum policies. The discussions focused on reinforcing the EU’s external borders, reducing irregular migration, tightening asylum rules, and accelerating deportation processes.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt proposed the creation of a new ‘European migration crisis mechanism’ and advocated for expanding the mandate of Frontex. He suggested transforming the agency into a ‘border protection and effective return agency’ with the capability to deploy intervention forces to border regions within 24 hours. Dobrindt also proposed extending Frontex’s operations to non-EU transit countries, subject to their agreement.
A group including Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Greece, alongside EU Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner, is discussing the establishment of detention or return centers in third countries outside the EU. The goal is to facilitate faster returns and implement the Common European Asylum System (GEAS) more effectively.
