European Investment Bank announces €1.9 billion in Portugal investments

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has announced a series of major investments in Portugal totaling €1.9 billion, marking its 50th anniversary in the country. EIB President Nadia Calviño detailed five distinct financing initiatives during a commemorative session in Lisbon.

A €750 million package has been allocated to support recovery and reconstruction in areas hit by extreme weather and storms during the previous winter. This fund will be split between municipal infrastructure rehabilitation and support for small, medium, and large-cap companies. Specifically, €250 million is designated for municipal infrastructure and equipment, while €500 million will be provided via the Banco de Fomento to assist small and medium-sized enterprises.

Other significant announcements include a €400 million loan to Metropolitano de Lisboa for network expansion and a €300 million loan through the Urban Rehabilitation and Revitalization Financial Instrument (IFRRU 2030) to promote affordable housing. Additionally, the EIB signed a €300 million tranche for EDP’s electricity distribution networks in the Iberian Peninsula, with €213 million directed to Portugal, and allocated €250 million to co-finance public entity investments under EU programs for 2021–2027.
