European islands see rising interest during autumn shoulder season

Travelers are increasingly opting for the ‘shoulder season’ in Europe—the period between peak summer and the low season—to avoid extreme heat and large crowds. Booking agencies report rising demand for destinations in Spain, Italy, Portugal, and France during September and October, as travelers seek more moderate temperatures and better value.

Among recommended destinations is Crete, Greece, which offers diverse attractions including the recently named best beach in Europe, Elafonisi, as well as hiking in the Samaria Gorge, ancient monasteries, and local wineries. The island is noted for being more budget-friendly during this period. Another notable location is Pantelleria, a Sicilian island characterized by its unique volcanic landscape.
