European lakes face overtourism as travelers seek hidden gems

Travel trends in Europe are shifting as popular lakeside destinations face significant overtourism. Highly frequented spots such as Lake Bled in Slovenia, which saw nearly 500,000 tourists in 2025, and Switzerland’s Oeschinensee, which will require gondola reservations during the summer of 2026, are becoming increasingly crowded.

To avoid heavy crowds, travelers are being encouraged to seek out lesser-known alternatives. Recommended destinations include Italy’s Lago di Orta for a more relaxed atmosphere compared to Lake Como, and Lake Ohrid for its historical significance and clear waters. In Switzerland, Arnensee is suggested as an alternative to the busy Oeschinensee, while Lake Bohinj in Slovenia offers a scenic experience within Triglav National Park as an alternative to the highly populated Lake Bled.
