European landmarks inspired Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castles

The iconic Sleeping Beauty Castles at Disneyland locations draw significant architectural inspiration from European landmarks.

At Disneyland in Anaheim, the castle was primarily inspired by Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria, Germany, which Walt Disney admired during his travels. Designers also incorporated elements from the Château de Chenonceau in France. The Anaheim castle was intentionally designed at a modest height of 77 feet to remain welcoming rather than intimidating.

In contrast, Le Château de la Belle au Bois Dormant at Disneyland Paris features a more whimsical and romantic aesthetic. Its design draws from Middle Ages illuminated manuscripts and storybook illustrations, with notable influences including the silhouette of Mont Saint-Michel in France and Neuschwanstein Castle.
