European leaders address Russian hybrid threats and infrastructure security

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte met in Brussels to address rising security threats, specifically following a suspected sabotage attempt on cargo aircraft at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The German government attributes the incident, involving military-grade equipment, to Russian actors. Von der Leyen stated that such actions will not be tolerated and noted that the incident has strengthened European resolve rather than undermining support for Ukraine.

To counter these hybrid threats, the Commission is exploring ways to further target Russian war revenues and is reviewing a multi-billion euro request for air defense systems, including PAC 3 Patriot missiles. Additionally, the FREYA program is being developed to enhance anti-ballistic defense in cooperation with Kyiv.

Addressing broader security concerns, von der Leyen is set to speak at the International Space Summit in Paris. The discussion will focus on the ‘European Space Shield,’ a new action plan designed to protect EU satellites and space infrastructure from increasing instability and hybrid activities, such as GPS signal interference and disruptions attributed to Russia.
