European leaders address security concerns and NATO autonomy
European leaders are addressing growing security concerns regarding potential Russian provocations and the reliability of collective defense. French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto have denied reports suggesting that the CIA expects Russia to launch drone strikes against Southern Europe. These reports, which cited an anonymous source near the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense, have contributed to a climate of heightened tension.
Simultaneously, the European Union is considering a proposal by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to establish a decision-making mechanism similar to NATO’s Article 4. This move suggests that European NATO members may be preparing for scenarios where they must act independently of the United States. The goal is to ensure territorial integrity and political independence in the event that the U.S. does not share the same perception of threats from Russia or chooses not to intervene in a direct conflict.
