European Lesser Kestrel population shows hope in Thrace
A sixth pair of the endangered European Lesser Kestrel has established itself in the Avanta-Kirkes region of Thrace, Greece. This development offers hope for the species, which is currently at risk of disappearing from the country.
While the new pair did not successfully nest this season, its presence is considered an encouraging sign. Tracking data from a bird tagged in Bulgaria in 2023 helped researchers monitor its movements. Meanwhile, the five existing breeding pairs in Thrace achieved a 100% reproductive success rate this year, resulting in eight young birds. These juveniles now face their first migratory journey, a trek of approximately 5,000 kilometers to reach management areas in Africa.
