European stock markets hit record highs on strong earnings

European stock markets are experiencing a significant rally, with major indices like the DAX, CAC 40, and FTSE MIB reaching historic highs. The STOXX Europe 600 has climbed for four consecutive weeks, hitting a new all-time high driven by strong corporate earnings and a shift in investor sentiment toward diversification away from volatile US technology stocks.

Corporate performance is a primary driver; earnings for companies in the STOXX 600 are projected to grow by approximately 22% in the second quarter of 2026, marking the strongest growth since late 2022. Key sectors fueling this growth include banking, energy, and technology. Notably, banking stocks like BNP Paribas and UBS have seen substantial profit increases, while the energy sector has benefited from geopolitical factors.

Investor interest is also reflected in capital flows. BlackRock reported $4.4 billion in inflows for its European equity products in July, and European equity ETFs saw their first month of positive net inflows since the escalation of the US-Iran conflict. Additionally, cooling US labor market data, which showed a loss of 23,000 jobs in July, has lowered expectations for US interest rate hikes, further boosting market confidence.
