AI investment boom widens economic gap between US and Europe
The global surge in artificial intelligence investment is significantly widening the performance gap between United States and European equity markets. While the S&P 500 has seen substantial gains driven by concentrated AI capital spending and earnings, the STOXX Europe 600 has outperformed the US market when AI-related stocks are excluded.
Infrastructure investment, particularly in data centers, remains heavily concentrated in the United States and Canada, which are expected to account for approximately 60% of new capacity this year. In contrast, Europe's share is estimated at only 10%. This disparity is reflected in the massive capital expenditures of major US cloud providers, which are projected to reach nearly $750 billion this year.
Despite the US lead, European technology venture capital saw a significant recovery in September, driven largely by AI and cloud computing. While the UK and France lead regional funding, the US continues to dominate with much higher annual spending on AI and cloud infrastructure. Additionally, some investors express caution, with certain surveys indicating that while AI is a top priority for wealth management, there are growing concerns regarding a potential investment bubble within the next five years.
