European MEPs request EU sanctions against Brazil's Alexandre de Moraes

Three Members of the European Parliament have formally requested that the European Union evaluate the possibility of imposing sanctions against Brazilian Supreme Federal Court (STF) Justice Alexandre de Moraes. In a letter sent to EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, Polish MEPs Adam Bielan and Mariusz Kamiński, along with Italian MEP Carlo Fidanza, called on the European External Action Service to investigate allegations regarding Moraes’s judicial conduct.

The MEPs cited concerns involving potential violations of freedom of expression, due process, political pluralism, and other fundamental rights in cases deemed “politically sensitive.” They requested that the EU determine if these actions warrant restrictive measures under the European human rights sanctions regime, drawing parallels to the framework of the U.S. Global Magnitsky Act.

The request also includes allegations regarding potential conflicts of interest involving Banco Master and a law firm linked to the Justice’s spouse. Additionally, the MEPs advocated for independent monitoring of Brazilian elections to oversee voting, media access, and judicial decisions affecting political campaigns.
