European meteorological services announce 2026/2027 storm names

Meteorological services across Europe and the UK have released the official list of names for the 2026/2027 storm season. The naming system, which begins on September 1, is designed to improve public communication and coordination between civil protection agencies during significant weather events.

In Southwest Europe, a collaborative effort involving services from Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Andorra has established a list of 21 names, starting with Adam and ending with Walter. This system is reserved for high-impact phenomena, such as those triggering orange or red weather warnings for wind, rain, or snow, and includes DANA (isolated high-altitude depression) events.

In the UK and Ireland, the Met Office and Met Éireann have also finalized their lists. The selection process for these regions involved public suggestions, resulting in names that honor meteorological pioneers, pets, and community members. Notably, former Met Éireann forecaster Evelyn Cusack has been honored with a name on the Irish list, a development she noted with humor regarding the potential for people to “be cursing the name” during severe weather.
