European Mobility Week promotes sustainable transport initiatives

European Mobility Week, scheduled from September 16 to 22, focuses on promoting sustainable and active transportation across various regions.

In Albergaria-A-Velha, Portugal, the municipality is hosting several initiatives, including free Albus transport services and a solidarity cycling event to benefit local firefighters. The program also includes “PEDIBUS” and “BIKEBUS” routes to encourage children to commute to school via walking or cycling, alongside “plogging” activities to combine urban mobility with environmental cleaning.

In Belgium, data from insurer Assuralia highlights a significant shift in commuting habits, with the percentage of workers using bicycles rising from 30.5% in 2019 to 41.2% recently. However, this trend has coincided with an increase in accidents related to soft mobility. Accidents involving electric scooters on commutes have seen a sharp rise, increasing from 208 in 2019 to an estimated 1,460 in 2025, prompting calls for increased road safety awareness.
