European mountain plants face accelerating extinction due to warming
An international team of 37 scientists has reported that rising temperatures are accelerating local extinction rates for high-altitude plant species across European mountain peaks. According to a study published in the journal Science, researchers analyzed vegetation on 62 summits between 2001 and 2022.
While warming temperatures have allowed more diverse species to migrate to higher elevations, this increase in overall species variety masks a critical loss of specialized flora. The warming climate has reduced the environmental barriers—such as extreme cold and frost—that previously limited plant distribution. Consequently, while the total number of species at summits may appear to be increasing, the specific plants adapted to high-altitude ecosystems are being lost at an accelerated rate, a trend observed in regions such as Sierra Nevada in Spain.
