European nations demand Israel halt West Bank settlement expansion

France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Italy have issued a joint statement demanding that Israel immediately halt expansionist settlement plans in the occupied West Bank. The European nations warned that such actions distance the region from peace and weaken Israel's international standing.

The diplomatic pressure follows the Israeli government's announcement of a new tender for 1,234 housing units as part of the controversial E1 settlement plan. This project is designed to divide the northern and southern territories of the West Bank and isolate East Jerusalem. The new tender represents nearly half of the 3,401 units approved for the project a year ago.

In addition to the joint statement, Belgium's Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot described the project as 'unacceptable'. The four primary European signatories also cautioned private companies against bidding on these construction tenders, citing potential legal and reputational risks regarding complicity in violations of international law.
