European nations strengthen defenses against hybrid and cyber threats

European nations are intensifying defenses against state-sponsored cyber and hybrid threats. In the Czech Republic, Tomáš Martynka of the National Cyber and Information Security Agency (NÚKIB) noted that while major attacks on state and university systems are becoming more difficult due to increased awareness and past investigations, the rise of artificial intelligence presents new challenges. Martynka highlighted that these sophisticated, long-term espionage operations, often attributed to groups linked to China or Russia, differ from typical financially motivated ransomware attacks by focusing on stealth and data theft.

In Germany, the government is planning to establish a ‘cyber shield’ following a recent incident involving a drone with explosives at Leipzig airport. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt warned that hybrid attacks—including drones, cyberattacks, and infrastructure sabotage—are a daily reality. The proposed ‘cyber dome’ would utilize a dense network of digital sensors to detect hacking attempts. Additionally, Germany plans to strengthen Federal Police units and increase airspace protection over major cities like Berlin, Frankfurt, and Munich to defend against escalating hybrid threats.
