European NATO allies offset U.S. troop reductions

NATO’s senior deputy commander in Europe, John Stringer, said European allies have largely compensated for the recent U.S. cuts to forces it would deploy in Europe in a conflict scenario. He told Bloomberg, “European allies have done undoubtedly more to compensate for the adjustments in US forces in Europe,” adding that this demonstrates “a stronger Europe in a stronger NATO.”

The United States announced significant reductions in its forward‑deployed troops, prompting NATO leadership to ask European members to identify additional capabilities. According to Stringer, when European nations cannot match capacities, they seek comparable operational effects through alternative means, emphasizing a “reasonable and proportional” redistribution of the burden.

U.S. President Donald Trump criticised the European contribution on Truth Social, calling the arrangement “laughable” and claiming the United States bears a disproportionate share of the alliance’s defence costs.
