European natural gas prices surge past 90 euros per MWh

European natural gas prices have experienced a significant surge, with the Dutch TTF benchmark exceeding 90 euros per megawatt-hour for the first time since December 2022. This upward trend, representing an increase of over 20% in the last month, is driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and instability in the Strait of Hormuz, which has impacted LNG supply chains. Specifically, LNG shipments from the Middle East are approximately 80% lower than during the same period last year.

In the Netherlands, rising energy costs have seen a one-year fixed contract for an average household increase by approximately 1,100 euros over the last 10 months. Similarly, in Bulgaria, experts warn that heating and hot water costs in Sofia could rise by nearly 30% as early as January due to rising gas prices and increased carbon emission costs.

EU gas storage levels were reported at approximately 74.62% as of October 21, which is below the seasonal average. The combination of lower storage levels and supply uncertainties is expected to maintain pressure on energy markets throughout the winter season.
